Before I was a Christian I remember telling people that I believed in God, but didn’t believe in organized religion. Looking back, I realize that I had no idea what I was saying. It was a way to feel independent, self-righteous, and yes, spiritual.
Who is gonna say that something that sounds as cold as “organized religion” could be healthier than something as hip and cool as “spiritual but not religious”, that phrase almost comes with a soy, fat free, latte and the Avett Brothers playing in the background.
Saying that is your belief system means you don’t believe anything, except that you are “god” of your universe and thus control what is real and true and what is not. Just be honest.
CNN just recently wrote an article talking about how a large number of people now claim to be “spiritual but not religious”. The article offers some good pushback on this type of thinking and believing.
